Will, I can’t thank you enough for the invaluable help I’ve received through your videos! Managed to set up my new DS423+ flawlessly - including remote access through Open VPN.
The only issue that I have with the Open VPN solution is that it appears to be quite slow - compared to what I’d expect based on the Internet connections available at both locations. What it can achieve is around 1 MB/s.
Would you have an idea on what the bottleneck might be, and whether any of the other available solutions could be faster?
Again, really appreciate all your help, and many thanks in advance for your reply!
EDIT:
In fact, I have checked transfer speeds the following way:
-Open VPN direct access in Windows Explorer
-Download file with Chrome from DSM using QuickConnect
-Syncing the file with Synology drive to Windows
In all three cases, observing the Resource Monitor always shows upload speeds between 1.1 and 1.3 MB/s. It appears to be continous so it would seem that the upload speed is capped around 1.5 MB/s. Would you have an idea what might be causing this?
I know this video has been up awhile, but I just discovered it today.
I have used the “Go” dropdown menu in the Finder to access the Network.
I had my smb in there as per Settings when I activated QuickConnect
It worked fine for pulling in files onto the Finder on my Mac Desktop
Then we moved from that house.
I moved the NAS to a friend’s house and set it up there (in the U.K.).
My Desktop is in another location here in the U.K.
Now my Go/Network access does not work and says it cannot find the network.
I cannot figure out what to do to get those files onto Finder again and will be travelling all over the world soon with a laptop I hope to buy in May.
Any clues on what is going wrong and how to sort this out?
(I can still use QuickConnect on the Desktop and also use the DS apps for iPhone and iPad without bother, but the best work is done in the Finder on the desktop or a laptop)
I currently use Synology Drive client for myself and one other employee. We sync everything to both our PCs. I have a new employee who I would like to share only a few folders instead of everything. I see that synology drive client does have an option to sync selected folders only, but I can only find this management on the client side.
Do you know if there is a way to manage this with Synology Drive Server from the server side?
I like synology drive client as it allows for files to be on the local computer instead of having to rely on an internet connection. But, if I have to, I will consider switching to VPN to enable folder permissions.
Hi Will, I am using the option 2 - which are Synology drive. And while I open the FCP from the nas, an error message pop out said that “copy document to a local, SAN or supported SMB location, try again” Izzul a MUST to using the LAN cable to hook up with my laptop?
Very informative video, but Why was DDNS not addressed? I used quick connect for a while, but it was slow. Once I set up DDNS with a Synology domain my transfer speeds increased significantly (I have fiber internet with 1gbps up/dn). I rely heavily on drive for my phone and laptop when I’m out in the field for work. And the faster speeds are noticeable with DDNS. I also need to often login to dsm from remote locations to work on spreadsheets or documents with Synology office.
I believe that’s likely handled under the file permissions separate of drive. If you go to your shared folders and edit permissions you should find what you’re looking for.
I desperately need someone’s help. I can’t seems to map my NAS to a Network Location like shown in the video. But I somehow can do it when using 3rd Party Software like NetDrive and Raidrive, so I really doubt there is any issue with my config. I even tried tnc my Hostname as configured in my Synology NAS DDNS with my chosen HTPPS port configure in WebDAV, and I see no problem. But when I try to add Network Location, it always shows “The folder that you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another.”. I really don’t want to pay just to be able to map my NAS. I’m using Windows 11 by the way.
I wanted to ask that I use synology photos on daily basis and it is a part of the business as well. however, whiile downloading media files from synology photos remotely without home network, it gets very slow. it shows that it will be downloaded after one day. Do you have any solution for this.
Hey Will,
Really have learned alot in the short time I have been watching your YouTube channel. Guess I was late to the NAS part as I just got a DS224+ and am setting it up. Stumbled along and have goton a bunch done. Got one question about your “5 ways to access your files …” video. I’ve got everyhting setup and when I put in the QuickConnect lin, I get told to enter a code from some app (which one no idea) but I haven’t seen anything about a code mentioned. I did get the system to send me an emergency code via email to enter which I did and worked ok. Can you enlighten me?
I set up TailScale and got it working. That was a bit of a chore as I had to reach way back in the old cobwebs in the head and pull out networking stuff I forgot many years ago. But I got it working. One question on TailScale is if I invite a relative to join my TailNet, when they dlownload TailScape software for their PC/iPhone, will they just see the devices I have registered on the TailScale page or can they actually change anything? Curious. Tried to send myself an invite at an alternate email but for some reason the process tried to get me to change the password on my email account??? Nothing doing so I backed out of that attempt.
Hi Will. I’m having a speed issue with OpenVPN. I have users on my NAS that say large files move fast at first but then slow down. (I have no firewalls.) Any ideas what could be the problem?
Just got my first synology for the home, and I’m attempting to set up remote access for file services.
I really like SynologyDrive, but the remote file transfer is upload and download are horrendously slow.
I’ve tried quick connect, and that was about 300 kB a second.
I tried TailScale, and that was about 3–4 MB per second.
I see that @james-melb wasa able to get gigabit up and down, and I’m shocked by this because I have 1GB fiber at my house where the Synology is hosted, connected to a UDM Pro, TailScale is installed on the Synology an my Macbook, the connection is totally fine, but it’s not even close to line upload/download.
I get similar performance over SMB using TailScale, and was under the impression that SMB was not favorable over remote connections due to latency issues.
Am I missing something? I’m not super certain how to even diagnose these kinds of speed-related issues.
Any thoughts you have would be awesome, I’m kind of poking what I can to see what works at this point lol.
