I have a DS923+. I am on DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 4 and my apps are current. I have had it a couple years. Most things work great. I use hyperbackup without problem. The ABB settings are baffling however. They don’t seem to provide the schedule settings (daily/weekday frequency) I see in Will’s youtube or any other on the topic. The Synology knowledge center, as usual, is not too helpful with its general (no screen image) pure word discussion. It says
“Scheduled backup: Define the desired backup schedule to daily or only on specific days. The task can run once a day or once an hour according to the settings. The backup task will be started when it is at the defined point of time.”
Unfortunately the screen I get for schedule in ABB doesn’t have that.
Here is the schedule. Note I am only allowed TWO options for backup frequency: hourly and weekly. There is no daily, weekday etc even though start is set to weekday!
My retention is advanced and seems to define what I need and I have enough versions allowed. I want a daily backup on weekdays kept for a week, a weekly kept for one month, and a monthly for 12 months. I believe the lack of a daily schedule frequency is the problem.
And this is all I have for backups. At the very least I thought I’d be getting weekly backups wiyh that schedule frequency, but it isn’t even that it appears to be monthly (7/15 to 8/11). Until I can get ABB working I have an attached SSD doing backups.
Thank you. I have now changed the “Start at” to everyday. The Backup Frequency will not offer anything other than “hourly” and “weekly”. Any idea how that backup frequency can be made daily?
I have it that way now and will monitor for a couple weeks to see what backups are taken and kept. A curious thing is that the system had some old backup versions, still within the total version limit, but not of the cycle I requested (e.g. backups remaining for several days in a row April). I deleted all but 7 of those backups and the system acted like it was now preparing for daily backups. The frequency field didn’t change to provide more than hourly/weekly but a backup was taken last night and the one that had shown as schedule for 8/11 was done. Strange. I’ll monitor.
Thank you for the response. I assume you mean Windows real time monitoring. I am uncertain how adding something to the mix would help or bypassing ABB. Synology ABB should be all that it is needed if it is setup/functioning correctly. It is reported to work effectively by many. I just might not be understanding it enough to get it to function correctly.
So I have been monitoring. It is now taking a backup everyday. Though it is not following retention set for 7 days, 13 weeks, 12 months, and 2 years. I have a daily for everyday going back to August 11. It has not hit the maximum versions now set to 34. It is at 28 versions. Maybe when the versions hit max, retention settings will kick in.
Thanks Paul. I appreciate your comments/support. I have monitored a while now and it is now saving and deleting the correct versions. The retention design is working.
