Hi I am thinking of adding a DX517 expansion to Synology DS923+, I have a 10Gbps connection to the NAS and mainly use it for my Lightroom photos mostly 45Mb raw images and some 4K video files, I also work with some gigapixel images. Its working OK at the moment jusy low on storage. I prefer not to have the extra work of maintaing an extra NAS. what would be the disadvantages.
A DX517 expansion is precisely where you want to use it for: expansion of an existing. You preferably create a separate storage pool on the expansion box. That storage pool and its volume might be a bit slower, but I have no experience. And as you mentioned, you do not have to manage another NAS.
