I am looking to implement a two way offsite backup. I have a Synology 923+ at my house and my Dad has a Synology 423+ at his house. I would like our NASs to back-up to each other in the event of a natural disaster. We both have our own data on them in shared folders. I am confident I can get them talking to each other through my VPN so that is not an issue.
My main question is where I should save these offsite back ups on each of our machines. We have enough data where we need to purchase additional capacity to make this work. Here is the current hard drive configuration on each:
923+ (Mine): Two internal 10TB NAS HDDs in SHR, backed up to local 8TB External USB Drive. Used capacity is around 5TB
423+ (Dads): Two internal 12TB NAS HDDs in SHR, backed up to local 8TB External USB Drive. Used capacity is around 6 TB
Both have 1 storage pool and 1 volume each.
I have already purchased an additional 12TB internal NAS hard drive for this offsite backup project, and plan on purchasing another 10TB drive. I see two options here for this offsite backup with internal drives.
Option 1: use these drives to expand our existing pools, and make a shared folder on each for the offsite backup
Option 2: create a new pool & volume on each NAS with the new drive that I purchase
Option 1 seems like the most robust as it leverages the existing RAID and adds some redundancy in that sense. Due to budget constraints I’d like to just purchase 2 total drives for this backup. Data privacy is not a concern, we both have access to each other’s data currently anyway. Would appreciate anybody’s insight as this is my first time doing this! Thank you!
