Can you connect your Synology NAS to your desktop PC/laptop with ethernet to avoid going over wireless?

When copying large files to the NAS from one’s MacBook Pro or Windows PC, I don’t want to go over wireless. My NAS is on another floor in my house so currently I have to go over wireless. If I moved my NAS to my office, where my Windows desktop PC is, is there a way to use ethernet to move files between my NAS and my PC? By moving my NAS to my office, the NAS is now connected to my Netgear Orbi router via one of its satellites, which has two ethernet ports. I am hoping that I can avoid having traffic go over wireless totally when all I want to do is to move large files from my NAS to my PC back and forth. Do I need to buy a switch and connect that to the NAS, and connect the PC to the switch?

There are different ways to do this, but the more versatile way is to add a switch and take the Ethernet cable coming to your NAS, and use it to “feed” the switch. Then you can have direct Ethernet to your NAS and PC.

Alternately, you can connect your PC directly to the NAS and with some simple IP assignments, they will freely “talk” with each other. If you NAS has multiple Ethernet ports, it is that much easier.

Disclaimer… I’m unfamiliar with “Orby”

I would try connecting both the NAS and PC via the Ethernet ports on the Orbi Satellite. This is what I am between my non-Synology NAS and my Mac and it works fine.

I have my Orbi System managing the DHCP so I simply get the IP Addresses assigned in both cases and it has been working without issue.

Now, as only use this for backups of my Main System Drive, speed has not been an issue so I don’t know for sure if the Orbi Satellite is acting as a switch and keeping communications local or if it’s still broadcasting the communications across the network like a hub would but I haven’t noticed an issue.

Yes, this is exactly my question. I have been doing what you are doing. A few days ago, I did discover a video on the Spacerex Youtube channel that covers exactly this topic entitled “Setting up a 10GbE Synology WITHOUT a 10GbE Switch on Synology NAS | 4K TUTORIAL”.
