Change storage pool from RAID 0 to RAID 1 while preserving all settings and configuration of DSM?

What’s the best way to change my volume from RAID 0 to RAID 1? I am using Hyper Backup, but I know it does NOT backup all the internal settings and configurations of DSM. Is there a way to export all my settings and configuration for everything in DSM and then just remove the entire storage pool and restore from the export? Then import from Hyper Backup for all the data? I wish DSM was stored on a seperate storage pool then the main NAS data storage pool. Thanks.

The good news is that it is easier than that. When you delete the storage pool as part of changing your RAID type, your DSM configuration—including users and groups—is not lost.
As you noted, DSM stores its configuration on a separate volume, which you can not see in Storage Manager. You only manage the data partition, not the system partition.

Hyper Backup always includes a configuration backup, just in case. Ensure you include as many applications in your backup task as possible. You might need to remove applications/packages before deleting the volume. When you delete the storage pool, it will also delete the volume.

Instead of RAID1, you can also consider SHR, which is a bit more flexible, depending on the number of disks you have and plan to use in the future.

Ahh that’s awesome. Gonna do this now. I only have a 2bay NAS is SHR worth the performance penalty or should I just go with RAID 1?

Either SHR or RAID 1 results are the same for a two-bay NAS with two disks. I am not aware of the performance penalty.

Don’t overlook the possibility of migrating to a 4-drive NAS in the future. SHR affords benefits over RAID 1 for that scenario. BTW … the “SHR penalty” is all but immeasurable. It is not a concern. Either way you will be fine.
