Changing Raid Type "Sata HDD not 4k native" Error

Hello- Newer Synology user here. Trying to change my Raid Type from SHR to SHR-2. But an error message of “SATA HDD not 4k native” won’t allow me to change the raid type even though the storage pool drives seem to all be good standing (i.e. Drive Status=Healthy | 4k Native=No). I’ve uploaded corresponding screen caps for more detailed look.

I can’t find any other info out there on how to troubleshoot and change the raid type to SHR-2.

Thanks in advance for any experience, help or advice you can offer!

Hard to tell exacly what you are doing, however…

  • The drive you add must be at least as large as the largest existing drive in the array.
  • You cannot mix 4K native and non-4K native drives.

It looks like all your drives need to be the same size or larger than the current storage pool. Drive 5 is smaller than the other 4 drives. Check the requirements for SHR-2. I beleive is has a 2 drive fault tolerant meaning 2 drives can fail and you can still operate and your data is ok. SHR is a single drive fault tolerant only one drive can fail.

For SHR-2 your 5th drive can’t be smaller.

The error message is actually “install more drives” and it’s telling you what to install.

You’re already using all 5 drives in your NAS, in SHR mode. You can only move to SHR2 by adding another disk, at least as big as those 20TB drives you already have (and it must be a SATA HDD and 4k native). Which means buying a bigger unit as yours is a 1522 (or spanning across an expansion, which is generally not advised).

The only other way is by backup and restore to a whole newly created drive pool.

User error, I am afraid! To go from SHA to SH2 you need to add an UNALLOCATED new HDD. It appears that all your existing drives are part of the current Storage Pool, so to make and SH2 Storage Pool you have to ADD a blank drive!
