Hello all, back for more info from those in the know. In the past when using HDD on desktop PCs, it was prudent to do a periodic defragmentation to make accessing data faster and smoother. I can’t seem to find any options in Storage Manager to perform such a task. I tried to search on the FAQ under DSM Help as well as the Storage Manager FAQ and QSG but don’t see nothing related. I’m sure it is probably called something fancy in NAS-ese. So am I on the right path or barking up the wrong tree. Thanks for any insight you can throw my way. A really helpful bunch on here and I’m glad to have the access to you all.
Interesting. Never dealt much with Linux other than to try it out a couple of times and quickly realizing I’m not a Linux user by no means. This fully explains why I’m not finding any utilities for defragmentation of the HDDs. Thanks for the link. Very informative and helpful.
Defragmentation is performed at the “file system” level―not on individual disks.
The operation is available in Storage Manager, under Storage, by clicking on the triple-dot (…) drop down menu next to each volume present in your structure.
I have read above article about linux ext4 filesystem and defragmentation.
But what about BTRFS? There IS option to run defragmentation in DSM if you have BTRFS.
