I am wanting to use a 12TB HDD for Hyper-backup via USB 3 on a Sata HDD docking station. I have finally found a couple of docking stations that accept more than 8TB drives but I am wanting to check if I can still connect a docking station to my DS423+. It will only be used for a once a month backup. Has anyone used this method? Did you have any issues that needed to be overcome?
Backup to USB drive in a docking station should work fine (I use it in fact).
Regarding the 8 TB “limit” you state, this is generally based on the fact that 8 TB drives were the larger drives available when the dock was released. They should be fine with any SATA drive. My dock is rated as “up to 6 TB” on the box, and regularly handles drives up to 20 TB (so far) with no special issues. I would suggest trying an “8 TB” dock with plans to return it if it doesn’t meet your needs.
