Drive in Critical Status during backup, but not really

I have had a Synology DS220j for a couple of years now. A few days ago, I upgraded to DSM 7.2.2-72806. I don’t know if that is related. During Hyperbackup to a USB drive, which I have been doing weekly for quite a while, both drives were reported “critical” intermittently and showed orange status lights on the front intermittently. The backup took more than 24 hours (I don’t know if that is longer than usual) and finished without errors.

After the backup finished, I ran SMART tests and IronWolf tests. Both drives pass with no errors. Also, no problems are shown in the history of SMART and IRonWolf tests.

Now, in a quiet state, everything is fine, and the system reports “healthy.”

Any ideas? I don’t want to replace drives if they are okay.

Test the drives thoroughly, connected to a PC, using OEM diagnostic software (or equal). SMART and IW tests are pretty basic.

Log into DSM and open Log Center. Select the Drives log and review the events in the log.

Thanks, I didn’t know that was there at all. It just shows lots of SMART started and SMART test ended. No errors at all.
