DSM 7.2 is now LIVE (full release out now)

DSM 7.2 has finally been launched full!

After many months of waiting Synology has pushed out the first full release version of DSM 7.2! This means that regular users can start using it! So far I have had none of my systems actually find the update automatically, but using this link you can just download the full release version of DSM for your NAS!

Video covering the release

DSM 7.2 Full Release Video:

My experience

So far everything has been rock solid and stable! No issues! The update to DSM 7.2 from DSM 7.1 actually went really smooth and took about 7 min!

anything new?

From the release notes (next section) there really is not much that has changed, but there are a few things I have noticed! and would really like feedback from people as well!

One thing I have seen is SMB now has performance analysis, which I do not think was on the release candidate:

and can give you graphs just like NFS does! Still working on checking out what we can use this for but could be really nice for debugging!

Release notes

Pretty much identical to the DSM 7.2 RC ones:

Version: 7.2-64561

(2023-05-22)

Important Note

  1. After installing this update, you will not be able to downgrade to a previous DSM version.
  2. This update will restart your Synology NAS.
  3. Starting from this version, logs for drives will no longer appear in Storage Manager > HDD and will be available only in Log Center.
  4. Removed the “Automatically create port forwarding rules” option from QuickConnect advanced settings to increase network security.
  5. Users can now create a Btrfs volume of up to 1 PB on specific Synology NAS models. This update automatically converts existing volumes that use the Btrfs (Peta Volume) file system to Btrfs. However, to create a volume larger than 200 TB, a RAID 6 storage pool and at least 64 GB of system memory are still required.Learn more
  6. The maximum single volume size supported by RS2423+/RS2423RP+ has been adjusted to 200 TB (with a minimum system memory requirement of 32 GB).
  7. Starting from this version, Windows Server 2008 domains will no longer be supported. After installing this update, current Windows Server 2008 domains will be unavailable.
  8. For the models below, you can only download the upgrade patch from Synology Download Center because you won’t receive notifications for this update on your DSM.

What’s New

  1. Added support for WriteOnce shared folders. This feature is based on the Write Once, Read Many (WORM) technology and can be enabled to prevent files from being modified, deleted, or renamed for a specified period.
  2. Added support for volume encryption. All volume encryption keys are stored in the Encryption Key Vault, which can be set up on a local Synology NAS or via KMIP on a remote Synology NAS.
  3. Added more Synology NAS models to support M.2 NVMe SSD storage pools. Learn more
  4. Added more Synology NAS models to support the M2D18 adapter card: RS822RP+, RS822+, RS1221RP+, and RS1221+.
  5. Added more SSD cache group management options, including changing the RAID type and replacing a drive.
  6. Added support for inline zero-block removal to increase the efficiency of data deduplication.
  7. Adjusted how drive information is presented in Storage Manager. Users can now quickly check the condition of their drives by looking at the “Drive Status” field.
  8. Users can now view the amount of used and free space for each storage pool and volume in Storage Manager.
  9. Added a warning notification for when the available shared folder quota is low.
  10. Supports deleting individual desktop notifications.
  11. Supports sending DSM notifications via additional webhook providers, including LINE and Microsoft Teams.
  12. Supports creating custom notification rules for system events, giving users greater control over what notifications to receive.
  13. Supports exporting a list of users and of groups.
  14. Added support for SAML to integrate DSM with external SSO servers.
  15. Added the option to allow non-admin users to safely eject USB devices.
  16. Users can now manually input the IP addresses or FQDNs of one or more domain controllers in the trusted domain. This allows Synology NAS to sync domain data directly with the specified domain controllers.
  17. Users can now enable Synology’s email server to send DSM notifications directly to their Synology Account.

Hi. I just updated to 7.2 (DS1522+) … so far I see problem with repair/update of some of aps. most of them updated no problem except for wordpress+web station+php my admin + Apache … + new container manager… status is “Starting…” for hours, and nothing can be done, same after full restart

@Kris.Szablowski really good to know! what errors are you getting out of the apps?

Also do you have high disk activity / CPU?

looks like problem is with Web Station. I tried manual update from Download Center - download | Synology Inc. … I manageed to Manual stop the process. looks like that app is corupted … messsage is Failed to update. nothing more
cpu 30%

I have a couple of issues and I don’t know if anyone else is having the same. I have the DSM 1522+ running the latest version, DSM 7.2-64561. I have the 10Gbit NIC card, but there is no option to enable WOL. I have LAN 1, LAN 2, LAN 3, LAN 4, but no LAN 5 for WOL. Second issue is that I have the Synology RT6600AX and I have it plugged into LAN 1 port on the unit which is supposed to be 2.5Gbit but the Synology NAS doesn’t register it at that speed. It only shows 1GB.

Hey, Will.

Have really benefitted from all of your YouTube Synology vids, which is how I discovered this forum.
[My first post, here.]
I have a new DS223 running the latest version of DSM–7.2-64561. For some reason I cannot seem to find the “Enable SMB3 Multichannel” option, under File Services/SMB/Advanced Settings/Others…

Perhaps my main SMB settings (under the “General” tab) are …incorrect? Or is my unit/setup perhaps not capable of offering this?

Thanks in advance!

{As a new user, the system only permitted one embedded “media” item. Here are the General SMB settings as currently set:}

annnnddd here are the “macOS” settings within that module…

You have Bond or Lan1/Lan2 separately?

Ah, it looks like the DS223 only has 1 ethernet port. SMB multichannel requires multiple ethernet ports to work so thats why its not there

I see. Thanks for answering my question, Will.

Along these lines, Synology support advised me today that my DS223 device doesn’t support Active Backup for Business, so, there’s another let-down—especially after watching your video on that feature. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Seems that the “+” sign after many model numbers really does signify some key capabilities.
Prospective buyers, take note…

Installed on a DS216+II. Installation had no issue other than removing iTunes Server (not compatible for now). So far no issues vs previous and I find the NAS to be faster. However there is no immutable option available for Snapshots.

Awesome! Good to know, I have not gotten my hands on enough older units so this is really good info!

Its looking like the immutable snapshots (and other immutable features) are currently limited to the newer units. I am going to see if I can find a compatibility list!

So far, so good on 7.2 on my DS220+. However, Hyper Backup hasn’t been able to backup the Photos app since the update. It’s a known issue that is hopefully resolved soon (in the meantime, you just have to restart the Photos app): https://community.synology.com/enu/forum/1/post/160777
