Yes and no. For my use case it’s easier to upgrade in two ways:
I can just keep adding groups of drives to a storage pool because it’s ZFS, and there are no real limits
It’s off the shelf hardware. I can just buy more expanders and keep adding them as I need more space.
That’s why it’s good for me. But for most home users it’s worse because you cannot just add one drive and expand your raid like you can with synology. Instead you have to buy another set of drives and add them all together
I don’t know if I am the First from Europe (The Netherlands) to join, but as a new Synology NAS user, I just bought my first NAS the DS1522+, which I installed with the knowledge from all your video’s, I am very exited to discover more.
Will - before this forum takes off - I would strongly suggest you go visit random forums, so that you get a feel for how you would like to set up this forum. I personally like the AVS Forum and CloudyNights (Cloudy Nights Forums) Forums. The breakout of the various topics makes it easily searchable. For the Synology NAS world, I would have Synology Photo, Video, Docker popular packages having their own dedicated sections. Welcome to Raleigh!
What I am really trying to figure out is the right balance of categories vs tags. Ideally Photos / Docker / everything would just be its own tag. I may still play around with how the stuff looks when its broken out
Understood - so categories: NAS Set-up. Applications (Packages): Photos, Videos, Docker. General section, where you can discuss anything like 7.2 beta, new product reviews etc.
Thank you for this space! I’m a gadget guy with a side of IT as a hobby. I’m all about making my life as trouble-free as possible through automation. Love your content as it has helped me tremendously in configuring my home setup (Unifi, Synology). Look forward to connecting with this community and sharing what I can.
