For a 4 or 5 bay Synology NAS, if I use a couple bays for Time Machine, can I use the other bays for something else?

If a couple of the bays for my Synology NAS will be dedicated to Time Machine backups, can I use the other bays for other purposes? Or, is it better that the entire array be dedicated just for Time Machine?
