Frustrated with Synology Drive

I have a DS220+. I keep getting files labeled with the cloud icon with and exclamation point! Those files will NOT sync. There is absolutely NO indication about what is wrong with these files. They seem to just appear. The sync task has a green check mark, but the modification dates for the files in I see in DSM File Station and those in Mac Finder are different. I’ve had a number of challenges with Synology - seriously thinking about looking into the alternatives. If you give me decent documentation, I can generally figure this stuff out. When I search Synology help on Synology Drive, I get tons of hits. But if I narrow the search filter, I end up entry handed. Synology! Buy a cheap Chinese AI agent and train it on your documents, so we have have a semi-decent document searching. You could at least tell what the cloud ! icon means.

This is NOT working!

I thought I would look at mine and see that my Drive (app on iPhone) does not sync at all. So I followed some instructions - enable sync - and now my folder on the NAS has lost most of the files. Thanks a bunch Synology.

Sorry for your loss. I hope you backed up your NAS. I lost a day of work by editing files from two computers, same account. When I fired up the 2nd computer, it blew away the edits I did on the 1st computer.

Yes, eventually I remembered I had hourly snapshots set up, so was able to recover. Thanks.

The files you mentioned would be stored in the cloud and NOT on your local drive. Synology Drive can only back up file that are located on your hard drive!

  1. Do any of the “!” files show a padlock next to them? If so and that icon is greyed out, it DNA, but if it’s solid (not greyed out) those files are locked. Click the icon to unlock them and they can be manipulated.
  2. Are the “!” files in a folder Drive has been told to sync and do they match any filters applied to sync/not sync?

Posting your settings for Drive would help a lot.

Solution

This is a recurring problem that Synology has been ignoring for years. The problem is that SD client is overwhelmed by sync tasks with large numbers of items (files and folders). The task I posted about was a Wix app project folder, which has a subfolder “node_modules” that has over 100,000 items. Even though the total folder size is less than a GB, the SD sync task can’t handle it.

I had the same issue with my image catalog of over 40,000 images. I submitted a ticket, which Synology addressed. The solution was to break the task into multiple tasks. That worked fine for my image folder.

But I can’t do that doesn’t work for a dev project, where everything needs to be in one folder. The solution is that node_modules does not need to be, and should not be, synced to the drive. The solution is that we need a “.gitignore” file for sync tasks. Synology already has that solution, but the “.gitignore” file is buried inside of the SD Client app bundle.

This pdf file, Synology Drive Can’t Sync node_modules, provides the details of how to edit the app bundle. It works just like .gitignore.

But why? These problems have persisted for at least seven years - see [Feature Request] Need for GUI-Based Directory Ignore Option in Synology Drive Client / Backup Rules. All they have to do is connect this feature that they already have to the SD sync task GUI.

Everybody - please help ring this bell! Go to the feature request linked above and like and comment.

Thanks sky. See my Solution post above. (No padlocks.)

By the way, my understanding is that the cloud icons on Mac are inherited from iCloud. The meanings of the cloud icons is found here. The meaning for the ! icon is “It shows the sync is finished. You can also see the time of the last finished sync.” That doesn’t help much, but then, the root problem is that the sync task is overwhelmed by the number of files, and these icons showing in Finder are not reliable when that happens.

I, being a total ignoramus when it comes to anything Mac, quite appreciated your posting that solution pdf. It was an interesting read. I’m glad you were able to solve your problem.
