My Nas just beeped me with a Volume Degraded warning.
It looks like my 4th Drive has crashed. (The storage manager screen is captured for reference)
Firstly, I feel absolutely FRUSTRATED with WD.
The 4th Drive was ordered from Black Friday Deal last November and was delivered few months ago!!!
Now it has crashed after few months!!
Not sure if WD sold defective HDDs intentionally as deals!!
It would be quite problematic for me as I am not residing is US for warranty and repair.
Can anyone give some advice on it?
Buying a new drive
I am not sure if I should buy an extra drive to replace the drive or just remove it to repair.
Since Amazon has no deals on the 20TB right now, I am wondering if I can buy another drive with smaller capacity. As you can see, I don’t need all the capacity right now. And I originally use 8TB for the first 3 drives. The 20Tb drives were inserted because of the deal…
Remove the 4th Drive and take it to repair (may take few weeks or months)
Is it okay for me to just remove the drive and let the volume run properly without Drive 4 because even wihout Drive 4, the lowered storage capcaity would be fine for me.
Having done that, drive4 needs to be remedied. First, I would click the Repair Now link and see if DSM is able to heal itself. If not, I suggest testing it using a PC with drive diagnostic software installed. If it proves good, I would clear the drive of its partitions, and reinstall it to see if DSM will repair the pool.
I don’t know what you mean by:
All you can do (if the drive is faulty) is exchange it. There is unlikely any “repair” service.
A degraded pool is not necessarily a faulty drive. This could be a software corruption. The drive itself may be fine. Until you test it, it is uncertain.
Additional to the recommendation by NewLeaf, I recommend you create an account on the Western Digital Website (Support for Western Digital Hard Drives | Western Digital) register the drive, in the event you need to send it back to WD for replacement. It is more than likely covered under warranty, you only have to wait the for WD to process and replace the drive. By registering my first drive, i got a 20% discount on for a new purchase. I am not sure if the 20% was a fluke, but i took it. I registered others and got 10%.
That’s a great question you have, since your storage pool is made up of Three 8TB drives and Two 20TB drives and one of the 20TB drives failed, the storage pool is based on the smaller drives. I too would like to know if i can install another drive between 8TB and 20TB. If you have your old 8TB drive, you could try it. If it is not compatible, Synology will tell you the drive needs to be larger. Good luck, I just went through this at the beginning of the year.
Are you absolutely 100% positive the drive(s) you received were new and not old-sold as new? And new, not refurb’d? Selling old as new drives has been quite the issue thanks to crypto mining. You may want to confirm.
