Hello. Think I’m asking the NAS backup something it won’t allow. Backing up to drive on a router usb port.
I want to backup over this route.
NAS → Router (192.168.1.1) → WAN → modem/router (192.168.0.1) → USB Drive plugged into modem/router.
I can mount the usb drive from Folders with CIFS.
But can’t connect to it with Hyper Backup.
Tried via WebDav (must the package be installed, reads like you only need the package for going into the NAS not out).
Tried connecting to the CIFS folder mounted to an empty Shared Folder, no luck, just saves in the shared folder. The mounted folder shows as folder in the Shared Folder.
You’re correct, that doesn’t work. You can user Hyper Backup to backup to:
1. An attached USB device;
2. Another NAS; or
3. A cloud provider, e.g., C2 (Synology’s), Backblaze B2, Amazon, etc.
If possible why not attach the USB directly to the NAS vs going through the router to a subnet?
Whether you can persuade your brother to buy a NAS or if you buy a second that you can locate at his house, this would give you the offsite backup that is an important component of a robust backup scheme (assuming you do not live with your brother).
You can hyperbackup over the network, but you’d need to do it via an rsync server if it wasn’t another Synology NAS. Does your router support running an rsync server? Or can you run an rsync server on a computer and mount the USB drive on that over the network?
