Migration to new NAS and RAID questions

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some guidance on a migration process I’m about to undertake. My current setup is a DS214play with 2×6TB HDD in RAID 1 (no Migration Assistant supported). I’ve just purchased a DS1522+ and plan to add three additional 4TB drives, for a total of five disks (2×6TB + 3×4TB), ideally ending up with an SHR configuration (16.3 TB Available capacity and 5.5 protection space).

My initial thought was to follow the HDD migration method I’ve seen in Will’s video tutorial, which appears straightforward. The idea would be:

  1. Move the two existing 6TB drives into the DS1522+.
  2. Add one 4TB drive and then convert/change the RAID type to SHR.
  3. Once converted, add the remaining two 4TB drives to the now-SHR pool.

However, according to Synology’s official documentation, RAID or pool type changes aren’t supported directly as part of an HDD migration. I’m also concerned about whether SHR can be enabled when adding a third drive that’s smaller in capacity than the original pair, and how this might affect the migration process.

Thanks in advance for any insights you can share

This is incorrect on multiple accounts. You cannot convert RAID1 to SHR. Further, you cannot add smaller drives to an existing RAID array (SHR, SHR2, RAID5, RAID6).
