I recently bought a set of bigger drives that I hooked up in a raid setup to store my photos. But I can’t for the life of me figure out how to to migrate Synology Photos to the new volume. I used hyper backup to make a backup of the photos folder and the Synology Photos app. But when restoring there is no way to choose a different volume and it automatically uses the volume from which it was backed up.
I know that you can choose the copy to option, but that just let you copy the files and not the application data. I’d like to keep my metadata and album collections etc.
Does anyone know what the proper steps are for this?
I did uninstall synology photos and then re-installed it on the new volume, but hyper backup didn’t really seem to care.
While I don’t know precisely which folders you are concerned with, you can “move” shared folders between volumes by editing the shared folder’s location property. DSM handles the content movement and preservation of links when you do that.
I presume you are using a DX, as multiple volumes on specific hardware can be headache to manage.
I have a 6TB drive in there that I configured as basic,
Two 8TB drives that I configured as raid and which should store everything from Synology Photos, and another 8TB drive configured as basic which should house my movie collection.
Why multiple volumes? Had you added the 8 TB media drive to the 2×8 TB RAID volume, you would have had the same storage, plus redundancy. Multiple volumes on a four drive NAS are seldom justified unless you require different formatting (ext4 and btrfs) for your volumes. I recommend reworking your set-up to a single SHR volume, and use shared folders to segregate media, etc.
The thinking behind it is that with the film collection I’m prioritizing volume over redundancy. This way I would have 8TB of secure storage for work and personal files, 8TB of media storage, and 6TB of storage to back up Google Drive.
It seemed logical to me, but perhaps I didn’t fully understand the combined storage I would have by putting all drives together.
Moving your photo collection in Synology Photos to another volume on the same NAS is a reasonably straightforward process. Are you aware of how to move a shared folder? Yes, well, that is all there is to it. If not, read on.
Open Control Panel > Shared Folder. Select the shared folder to move. For Synology Photos, the /photo shared folder represents the Shared Space. In the Locations field, select the other volume from the drop-down list.
The Personal Space is stored in the user’s home folder. As mentioned above, to move it to another volume, move the /homes shared folder.
In the background, Synology Photos is instructed to look at a different volume.
There is no need for a backup-restore process.
