Moving to a better NAS

Hello all,

Love this forum - thanks Will.

I gave a pretty basic DS220J.

It is functional enough but very slow.

I am going to buy a Synology NAS with a bit more horsepower.

One I have bought, is there a tried and tested (and simple) procedure for moving data from my old NAS to by new NAS??

Many thanks in advance!

Paul

migration assistant would be where I start.

I would agree with @notsimar, migration assistant is probably the best! It has worked for me every time I have used it.

It also will let you change from EXT4 to BTRFS which is a huge plus!

I’m migrating from an older NAS 7xx series 2 bay unit with a 5 bay expansion to a 15xx 5 bay unit. As far as I can tell, I only have 3 paths for migration. Remove the disks from the old unit and insert them in the new unit which won’t work since I’m going from a 7 drive system to a 5 drive system. I know we can purchase an expansion unit for the 15xx but the client doesn’t want to spend more money if they don’t have to. Second option is Hyper backup from one NAS to the other. The process to read the data on the old NAS, just to give me a time would take longer than I have in my lifetime. I have 20TB of data to migrate. The third option is Migration Assistance which would take 155 days. The old NAS must stay online during the migration process. Does anyone know any tricks to shorten this procss or maybe a 4th way to migrate the data and packages from one NAS to another?

Why not link and restore your current Hyper Backup backup to the new NAS? Otherwise, if you can live without package migration, Shared Folder Sync can copy over all shared folders with full network efficiency.

I looked into that option. It would take longer than using Migration Assistance. What is Shared Folder Sync?
