First time posting here and quite new to the Synology NAS universe.
I could use your help since I am not sure what is the best course of action for me configuring the NAS.
I have at the moment a Synology DS220+ with 2 x 3TB WD Red hdd.
I want 2 things out of it:
To be able to keep in sync folders that are on the work computer with the laptop I use at home. Basically, if I start a project at the studio, I wish I could access it from home and carry on working.
I work in audio so a project generally ranges from a 300mb to 1gb.
If I have a folder with audio samples on the studio computer, I would like a copy of this one to be synced on the NAS, and then I would like to be able to access it from home, to further edit it.
I would like to be able to have a section on one of the drivers where I can just share the final projects with the clients. Think Dropbox but on my own NAS and not instead on a cloud.
Would this mean this would have to be an FTP? Would I need to setup differently the NAS if I would also want it to sync folders?
These are mainly the things I would like to do with it. I am on mac OSX and from what I read the DS220+ can support up to 24TBs of HDD space.
Synology has a tool to sync files and folders between your NAS and PC or Mac. It is called Synology Drive Server on the NAS and Drive Client on the PC or Mac.
Sharing contents on your NAS with others requires external access to make your NAS accessible from the internet. In addition, you choose an application to share the contents via that external connection. File Station is an option, by Synology Drive does the trick as well.
Thank you very much Paul! I’m going to test the Synology drive server right away and see if it works out.
Regarding your answer to Q2. Is it possible to have folders that I can sync from my mac one of the drives in the NAS, and at the SAME time also, have a folder that can be shared over network with clients? This would be the ideal scenario for me.
If not, I will sync the files on one drive and make the other drive exclusive for sharing content with clients.
Yap you can have one folder with multiple foders synched with your laptop and 1 or multiple sub-folders synced with external users, but you need to think very well on setup, because after this is done you can’t change some configurations!
In my synology I backup all my onedrive / google drive … < - - some important folders from onedrive I backup to blackblaze, in parallel I have another onedrive folders synched with android to backup important folders on android.
About your question 2, you can share with synology share and send short url to externals users, or if you use onedrive or google drive, share with them.
