Offsite Back up set up and initial transfer of large amount of data

Hi-

I have a DS1522+ (West Coast) and a DS923+ (East Coast). One is located on the West Coast and the other on the East Coast. My West Coast NAS contains all of my critical data primarily consisting of personal video files, music files, photos and documents totalling 15TB. I have a USB portable drive attached to it with a back up schedule via hyperback up (multiple versions). I also quarterly export that hyperbackup up folder to another drive that I then move and keep in off site storage also on the West Coast while I figure this out.

My East Coast NAS is a blank slate that I don’t plan on using for much other than as an offsite back up for my West Coast NAS. I’m hoping to be able to do so without having to do the initial large copy of all of my data over the internet. If I take my USB a portable drive withe the hyperbackup up file to the East Coast and copy it onto my DS923+ can I point hyperbackup up on my West Coast machine to my East Coast NAS (via tailsacle or maybe a cloud flare tunnel) and have it recognise and append the back up files for future back ups?

or do you have any alternative methods you’d suggest?

A bunch of the data will not change often, so I’m open to doing a full copy of all of it to an external drive then taking that to the East Coast and copying it to my Was Coast NAS. But then I’d want to use a Synology package that would sync the corresponding folders between the two NAS’.

Your query is… confusing. Try giving us your ultimate goal in all of this. Not the tools you think may or may not get you there, but what you ultimately want to have at the end of it all. Just a backup on the other coast? Two synchronized systems you can work locally on at either coast? Other things?

I have a similar setup. The difference being that the remote NAS is in use by another family. I use Tailscale and Hyper Backup to back up between the NAS:s. Occasionally I have needed to renew the Tailscale settings. Other then that, it is just ticking along, day after day, year after year.

Thank you for responding. In the simplest terms: I want a remote copy to back up of my data on my out of state NAS. I am open to the best ways to to that whether it just be a back up or two sychronized systems. Each way will have their own pros and cons and based on those I’d be flexible on how to set this up. Is it my flexibility that confused you?

All of these can be done using free Synology’s apps:

  • Backup-only… pretty straightforward.
    • PHB’s example adds in the 3rd party Tailscale app, perhaps due to the ‘other family’ (idk, just guessing)
  • Synchronizing two or more separate sites and providing basic backup
    • more complicated
    • takes some time to do right
  • Synchronizing two or more separate sites and providing backups for all endpoints, and NAS’s, locally and in the cloud, while allowing “in person on the LAN” seamless work at either or both sites independently or simultaneously
    • still more complicated
    • takes more time
    • requires some small CapEx
      • local backup drive at each site … can be < $200/ea depending on amt of storage
      • cloud subscription (this is the ‘earthquake’ backup, far remote from you, monitored 24/7/365, security, etc.) … can be < $20/mo depending on traffic and amt of storage
