I’m planning to upgrade to 10 GbE and have (poorly) sketched out my planned configuration. I will also be upgrading my primary NAS to a DS1825+ (when it’s released), and making my current DS1618+ NAS, a backup. I will also be adding a 10 GbE switch, as well as the other 10 GbE cards/dongles/etc.
Primary use of this layout is to move my photography libraries to the NAS and edit from there, using Adobe LRC, PS, rather than my local HDD. I also do a bit of video editing with FCPX, and plan to edit those files from the NAS.
Secondary uses will be:
- A file server, replacing my reliance on DropBox
- Home surveillance with 4 IP cameras
- On site backup to my second NAS
- Off site backup to my original DS716+ NAS (not shown)
Questions:
- Does my planned layout look reasonable? I’m not sure if I need to link the two switches, or if the router does that already.
- I should be able to access my entire network from my MBP connected to the 10 GbE switch, right?
- Any recommendations for a good 10 GbE switch? I currently use a TP Link managed switch so I can set up link aggregation and have more control. Should I try to stick with a managed TPL multi Gb switch for compatibility?
Apologies for the long post! I’m a long time Synology user, but still relatively inexperienced with more than basic networking. Recently found SpaceRex’s YouTube channel, and learning tons from it!
