Securing Erasing all Hard Drives in a Synology

I am upgrading to a DS923+ since the hard drives aren’t compatible. I wanted to secure erase both drives:

  • I was able to secure erase one hard disk
  • On the second one I get the error “You cannot perform Secure Erase on the only drive in your system partition”

How do I get around this? No longer need the drives.

So you need 1x OS drive to be able to secure erase another. So what you may want to do is SE one drive.

Then shut down the NAS, remove the remaining drive and install DSM on the drive that was secure erased. After that add back in the drive that has not been secure erased and erase it!

(Or take a drill to the drive)
