SFTP password works on LAN, but same password fails remotely

I have enabled SFTP on my Synology NAS DS1815+, DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 6

Using WINscp 6.3.1 on my laptop I can connect to a user account on the NAS and file transfer normally provided the client is on the LAN

The same laptop on the WAN fails to connect at the password validation -

Presumably, your firewall is blocking ssh traffic from the WAN. This is a good thing, especially if you are allowing password authentication instead of requiring PKI.

Just for completion here, I resolved this problem by updating the router’s firmware, which was a release behind, and as a consequence, a reboot of the router.

I suspect a reboot would have been sufficient since the firmware update was a very minor release.

A reboot fixing a problem - who knew :wink:
