I have a 1621xs+ raid 5 with nine (8GB) drives.
10Gb network with computers setup either as 10Gb ethernet, and/or Thunderbolt 4 adapters.
The configuration on the NAS is set exactly like everyone has said in the 100’s of forums I have read:
Max SMB: SMB3
min SMB: SMB2
Transport Encryption: None
Server Signing: None
Enable opportunistic Locking: checked
Enable SMB2 file leasing: Checked
Enable SMB during handles
Enable VFS module to convert Mac Special Characters
Allow Symbolic Links within shared folders
do not reserve disk space
Also, on all of our mac’s we have Jumbo frames turned on.
Here is what is absolutely silly:
Our Upload and download speeds for major file transfers (20GB-100GB folders), through the SMB link is averaging 20-30Mb/sec…
Also, If I use Synology Drive to download the same set of files through a web link, it is also 20-30Mb/sec
We have another NAS that didn’t get updated (1517+) with a 1Gb connection only: Using AFS, its upload and download speeds are consistently at 75Mb/sec.
I have ready hundreds of articles, videos, etc and cannot figure out HOW to make the newer technology faster now that I have upgraded the NAS to 7.2.2…
Great questions.
Yes Nas is set for MTU9000
WiFi is turned off on suspecting computers
The switches are unmanaged, but according to all of the switch specs, they support jumbo frames coming through.
Lastly when I set this network up, I got rid of all cat 5e Cables, and I went through last week to make sure double check to ensure anything touching this network was cat6
And yes we are in the latest version of DSM as I upgraded to that version yesterday.
Yes SMB via finder… and yes a 517 with one big storage pool.
I’m a photographer and after we are done with our sessions, need to upload our sessions to the Nas, but then because of the nature of our business, often have to go back and do additional work, or access the files again. It would be too inefficient and cause a lot more human error to pull the files off of the Nas back to a computer to work on them to then have to out the master files back in the Nas, (and keep version control)
Just FYI… but jumbo frames are seldom an issue with modern equipment, and often settings do more to foul connection handshakes than and good one hopes for. Compare and contrast for your own environment.
After much testing and lots of frustration, I now have a list of things that just don’t work as I think it should since upgrading to DSM 7
Copying large folders of file either to or from Nas. The speed varies as it is running.
Copying from computer to the Nas is somewhere between 20Mb/Sec and 300Mb/sec.
Coping from the Nas to the computer is between 1Mb/sec to 150Mb/sec.
With a 10Gb connection, it’s disappointing.
Opening capture one sessions are ok, until there is a session with over 3000 images, and then it never opens, and just stalls.
Once multiple users are in the office, things slow down from what is listed above.
I feel like synology and Apple need to get their act together as the SMB connection is not working at speeds like it should.
Just looking for any advice as we have a 250 different photography appointments coming up from June through August and need this network to be working much more efficiently for our team to get through the editing and ordering of these session using the Nas like we have done for every year prior to upgrading to 7.2.2.
If I turn on the Read Only SSD cache from my expensive m2 drives, which worked fine in the pre DSM 7.2.2, takes copying large files down to a crawl. I have now had to remove the SSD cache to get the above file transfer speeds. Otherwise, the file never gets to the speeds listed above.
Had an IT guy look at it and he asked if I have ever used NFS? I had no idea what the difference was… we finally figured out how to map shared folders from the Synology NAS and WOW… full 10Gb speed. I have NEVER seen the server work that quickly with my macintosh network. I am now able to work directly off of it, including a very large Capture one session that incudes over 5000 images… it works “almost” as fast as it does on my local hard drive. Large files are not transferring in both directions in seconds/minutes…
Bottom line from my experience… Apple needs to fix their SMB protocols when working with Synology.
