Frequently, when I sit down to work on my pictures, the first time I launch Lightroom Clasic (LRC), the only images that it can see are on my local drive, not so on my DS1522+, where I store around 90% of my images All of those are showing as unfindable.
I want to know
A) Is this a normal behavior?
B) If not, is it going to cause a problem?
C) Is there a better way, possibly within a DSM app, for this to work? Potentially then able to have the Mac see the NAS drive as local?
The connection I have been making between the NAS and my Mac is a SMB that is setup (not completely sure I have done it correctly, open to all possibilities)
The cause of the problem is that the SMB connection to the Mac is not active any more.
The workaround I have worked out is simply to use a finder window to reestablish the connection…then all the images in the catalog can be seen.
If possible, I’m looking to find an answer to the following:

D) If C is YES, would it make it possible Mac see the NAS as a local drivel?
A) Yes, this is normal behavior. When your Mac goes to sleep, the SMB network connection might not be re-established after it wakes up. Any application that depends on that connection is affected. There are a few variables in the equation, such as the type of Mac (laptop or not) and network connection (WiFi or Ethernet).
You could check that the NAS does not hibernate (Control Panel, Hardware & Power).
B) n/a
C) You could consider disabling the sleep mode on the Mac and only switch off the screen after a period of inactivity.
D) No.
This is normal behavior for me as well. For the past few years, I keep LR folders both on the NAS and local HDD. My intention is to move photos to the NAS when I’m “finished” with them.
I am exploring ways to get a faster connection to the NAS, so it’s easier to work on photos stored there, but I’m still developing my workflow.
In any case, I’ve never had a problem with LRC not immediately finding the network photos, just browsing to their location with a finder window re-establishes connection. My main computer is a MBP, so it doesn’t stay connected to the NAS on a regular basis anyway.
