SSD in 223j, is it worth it?

I have a 223j (DSM7.3) with one 14TB drive. It’s used to backup various computers, photos from phones and holds our music collection that is accessed by multipule users with Audiostation.

I find I have a free 250GB Samsung SSD and have a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor. Would it be worth installing the SSD in the free bay and moving the shared music folder to it for a quicker load?

If so what would be the best appraoch. Put the SSD in Pool 1 and make it a 2nd Volume. Or make the SSD a 2nd Pool to itself?

I can’t find anything online to say this NAS supports the ssd cache, feature, so assume it doesn’t.

Thanks

You cannot combine SSDs and HDDs in a pool. The 223j is slow as my grandmother. An extra shot of caffeine has little effect.

Thank you Newleaf. Half expected that sort of answer.

I read more around this and gave it a go.

I fitted a spare Samsung evo 256GB I had in the second bay. It warned me it wasn’t a Synology one.

Once in I set it up as a new additional storage pool and a separate volume.

All was happy. I moved my 40GB music folder to the SSD. Initially AudioStation couldn’t see my music files anymore. But after cutting and pasting everything in and out the music folder with FileStation, AudioStationi found them again!!. I had also tried uninstalling and reinstalling AudioStation, which obviously didn’t help, found it gave me the choice to install it on the HDD or the SSD, so I put all on the faster drive.

I’m pleased to report the initial load time when opening AudioStaion on my phone is much reduced. So much better I moved the folder and app for Chat there too, making it actually practical to use off my 223j.

Maybe it’s my imagination, but everything seems to be running smoother than before.
Hope this helps someone.
