Starting to upload photos to new NAS

I am about to start my new DS923+. I would like to upload all my photos from the pc, laptop and phone to synology photos. I have the photos in the pc in different folders according to the occasion but in iphone they are not. I would like to keep the folder info. How should I do the uploading? I mean should I start so that I make one folder for pc, one for laptop and one for iphone? My idea is that I would be able to see what is from pc and what from laptop etc. But at the same time I don’t want to limit search possibilities of something. What is the best practise to do all this?

My suggestion is to forget your current organization for a moment and start playing around with Synology Photos. This app has its own way of organizing photos in folders, different views that affect imports and albums. You can directly import (or backup) photos from your smartphone to Synology Photos.
Once you get the idea, you start from scratch and fill the NAS with your images.

It makes more sense to discuss Synology Photos when you have it up and running.

So you are saying that I should forget my folder structure and just import the photos without folders. With this method I will loose the info like ”wedding” ”trip to Berlin” etc.

No, that is not what I intended to say. On your computer, folder names were the only way to organize and recognize collections of files. With Synology Photos, you can still use that and bypass the import function, but there are other ways you might never discover unless you start with a blank sheet or an open mind (no offense).

Any library or catalog-based software can use albums and smart or conditional albums, which are much more versatile than the good old folder structure. In addition, you can share those albums with others.

I wanted to prevent you missed all that by sticking to your folder structure beforehand and forcing that onto Synology Photos.

Thank you that was the purpose of my question as I don’t want to miss anything. I don’t want to import everything and then be stuck with it. Can I import the photos with folders to Synology and then use the Photos -app and tell there that ”there they are, please use those”. If I end up putting them as copies it is ok If than cannot be avoided. Do I loose any functionality in photos app?

Best thing would be if I had a script that would copy the folder names to photos meta data. I have 20 years if photos with about 50 folders per year. The folder name has year + occasion.

Synology Photos uses a dedicated folder. Copy your image folder into that folder and you will see the folder structure in the SP app.

I agree with Paul, I recommend you also do some additional youtube searches for setting up and using Synology Photos. It has a lot of power for categorizing, organizing and finding photos.
