Sync and IP question from beginner

Hi,

I am new to NAS. I have used DAS in the past to store my data. But I needed a solution to connect and sync files from/to a remote work location.
I have bought a DS1821+ with a 10GbE port as my main NAS at home. I have connected the 1821 via the 10 GbE port with a static IP to my Mac Mini (native 10GbE port). And I have connected the 1GbE port of the 1821 to a 1GbE port of my router to connect with the internet. I have no switch. I work mostly with video and photo files and I edit directly from my NAS. The 10 GbE connection is working good so far.
Now at my remote work location I installed a DS923+ with a 10GbE port. I also did not use a switch. I have only one computer at each location that will make a connection with the NAS.

I have set up a shared folder on the 1821 and 923 and I use ShareSync and quickconnect to sync. But it is very very slow. I only get kb’s and my internet speed is much faster at the remote location and at home.

I have read that it can be faster when I make a direct connection via the IP of my main nas at home?
So I will try to set up OpenVPN, then I can make a direct connection without Quickconnect.
But there I get confused. As I don’t have a switch, I have two IP addresses. 1 from the 10GbE connection to the NAS and 1 GbE connection from the NAS to the Router/Internet.
What IP address do I use to connect from my remote location, via OpenVPN to my main NAS?
Do I use the IP adres of the 1GbE nas-internet connection? Probably a very beginners question. It’s just very confusing.

And will that direct connection give me a faster sync speed or are there better options?

Thank you!

When you establish a remote connection between the NASs, you always connect to the IP address of the NAS that connects to the router.
The direct connection, which always confuses users and should be prevented, in my opinion, is inaccessible from the router and therefore from the internet.
You could establish a VPN connection or use DDNS with port forwarding.

Thank you Paul.

I also noticed that sometimes the slow connection is chosen when working at home (direct 10Gbe connection). Can I somehow put the fast connection as the first option? Or maybe it’s better to invest in a switch and just have 1 IP address…

Hi, I bought a 10GbE switch and set up OpenVPN. Now I have a local IP and an OpenVPN IP.

I can access my NAS at home via OpenVPN on a remote desktop.

Now I want to establish a direct connection for the ShareSync between my two NAS devices. But I am a bit confused. How do I proceed to set up ShareSync with OpenVPN. What do I fill in as ‘remote nas address’? The new OpenVPN IP of my ds1821?

Also I heard Will talking in another video ‘How to Fix SLOW SYNOLOGY - Remote Connections’ that I also can open port 6990 (and 5000, 5001) without an OpenVPN connection. Is that safe? Or is better to take the extra step and use OpenVPN?
