Synology NAS to Glacier Deep Archive

The Glacier Backup app does not backup files to the Glacier Deep Archive storage class.

What’s the next best way to do it on a Synology NAS? I have a DS220j.

Here are two approaches:

  • Rclone should do this. To minimize storage costs, consider zipping what is to be backed up (7z, tarball…).
  • Initially sync to S3. Set a bucket policy to move from standard storage to glacier deep archive after a day (or a grace period you choose).

Or consider Backblaze B2. Or a USB dock mounted drive.

Requests for deep archive support have been ignored by Synology since it was first offered.
