Synology - Never Again

This is why I will never touch a Synology product again.

The support is hopeless, clueless, they don’t understand or keep up to date with their own products.

The Synology DS418, ok it’s bottom of the range, but all I expected is that it would do what they say it would do.

  • None of the loaded backup options work for PC’s. It is impossible to pull data off PC’s and back it up.
  • The web services don’t work. They used to, but not now, because they pulled support for WordPress, something not even their idiotic support team was aware of. They disabled my business web sites without even warning me and then claimed no knowledge of what they had done.
  • Only a limited range of harddrives are supported and, of course, these are some of the slowest and most pointlessly expensive on the market.

I have had this brick for a few years and all it can manage is to be a very average fileserver with limited functionality.

For a fraction of the price I could have build a comparable RAID server on an INDUSTRY STANDARD operating system, not the crappy DSM that is preinstalled. For the same price it would have more drives, faster drives and better RAID resilience - and applications that actually work.

So, all I have left is an overly large file server that lacks compatibility with everything around it.

Never again!

Jenny:

I’m sorry you’re having these troubles. I bought my first NAS just a couple of years ago, and I’m satisfied with it. I am definitely not a NAS expert. I appologise in advance if my questions are subpar.

Wordpress is a website platform that runs on a web browser. What kinds of special WordPress services is expected from a NAS?

On the limited range of hard drives, and this might be stupid, NAS drives spin continuously, 24-7. The majority of drives for home use can’t do that.

I believe there was a Wordpress app - sorry if that’s no longer supported. Can you get Wordpress running on docker (container manager) instead, which is probably far better and more up to date.

The NAS is a bit slow (even the latest ones are a bit slow) but they’re good for use as a file server, even a slow regular server. Definitely a good target for backup - you can run whatever backup software you want on your machine, the NAS won’t care. The supplied “active backup for business” is rather good though.

Wordpress is in the Synology store as a free download. Last update was 7 Feb 2025. Case closed!

A DS418 would have come with what, DSM 6.0? That model is now on DSM 7.2.2 and seven years old and doubtless past even extended warranty — which leaves the User searching forums, Reddit, etc. Not saying I know anything about the individual situation OP may be in, and I could certainly understand the rant if the DS is up-to-date, but if it’s not…
