Synology To Allow Third Party Drives Again in DSM 7.3

I have just gotten on very good authority that Synology will be reversing their previous decision to block third party drives coming in DSM 7.3 which should be tomorrow!

They are still looking to get drive manufactures to validate their drives, but Synology will allow any 2025 model to once again build a storage pool with any hard drives, as long as they are not expressly on the “incompatibility” list

Video to come soon!

Thanks, Will, I watched your video.

Did you know that Synology lets you download the HDD compatibility database and upload it before installing DSM on a new NAS? A new version was made available yesterday. It is called the Synology HDD/SSD Offline Update Pack.

Not tested, but it should work on DSM 7.2.x and running machines.

Hello. I Looking to buy a synology 8 bay for Black friday. Just in case the unit i buy doesnt come with the lastest firmware i was wondering you think i could install the update on the NVME SDDs that i was planning to buy and then install seagate harddrives after the firmware has been updated then change the SSDs into a read and write cache. im hoping this way i can avoid buying a synology HDD to update the firmware and by 2 28tb seagate drives instead

NVMe’s are still locked down. And only certian x25 DS units have been freed from Compatibility List compliance.

If you don’t mind unsupported workaround, there is a patch script on GitHub that releases drive constraints. Of course there is a strong likelihood that Synology will decline support requests on units overwitten with the patch script.

even the synology branded NMVE SSDs because that is what i was planning to buy? was hoping that i could install the update on 1 and the install the HDD then change the SSD into a read write cache. Just confirming?
