Tailscale Questions for Remote Access

Couple of questions…

  1. If I configure the NAS to use Tailscale, would I still be able to access it via a PC on the local LAN? (I beleive the answer is yes)
1a) Or am I better served by the local PC also running Tailscale and accessing it via the Tailnet?

  2. My phone is currently configured to use Photos Mobile to backup my iPhone photos via port forwarding. If I wanted to move to Tailscale, does that mean I need to be logged into the Tailnet all the time for the backup to run in the background?

  3. I use OpenVPN when I’m traveling (especially internationally). Does Tailscale replace that functionality? Are there geographic locations that prevent access to Tailscale? [Note that even after enabling the Task Scheduler scripts, I had to ssh into the device to set the exit node advertising flag before I could set the devices as exit nodes.]

Thanks!

Yes, yes and yes.

re: #3… If the NAS is a Tailscale exit node, you can VPN (using your Tailscale client) into your network, and access the ‘net, as if you were at the NAS’ location.

Thanks! Do you know if there are any circumstances where Tailscale would close on itself/stop? I setup a replication between 2 devices in the tailnet last night and somewhere along the line, it failed. I checked this morning and noticed that TUN was reporting as NO. Ran the Tailscale Up scheduled task manually and everything seemed to work again.

Is there a notification I can configure if this happens again (before I get a notification that the replication failed)?

I’ve not had that experience. Are you running other VPNs?
